Unreal Tournament III (XBOX 360)
By: Adam Waddilove

Can the 360 make Unreal Tournament 3 anymore frag-tastic?

Unreal Tournament 2007 marks the arrival of the industry’s premiere multiplayer first-person shooter on Xbox 360, utilising the new Unreal Engine 3 technology to take Unreal's graphics, playability and challenge to a new level.

Unreal Tournament players assume the role of a futuristic warrior engaged in contests of intense battles against skilled opponents, controlled either by human contestants online or by A.I. Fought with the most powerful sci-fi weapons and vehicles, Unreal Tournament III is Xbox 360 FPS action at it’s best!

Unreal Tournament III Features:

  • Unparalleled graphical and physical realism: New Unreal Engine 3 technology delivers the most compelling First Person Shooter Experience to-date, online and offline!

  • Vast arsenal of weapons: Unreal's weaponry is now bigger and badder than ever. Destroy your opponent from a distance with the ever popular Link Gun or blast away at close range with the Bio Rifle. Unreal Tournament III boasts a whole host of weapons - including many returning, upgraded favourites for maximum performance and killing sprees.

  • Single player mode rivals the online experience!: Battle against lightening fast A.I. in Unreal's new deeper and richer single player tournament mode.

  • Onslaught vehicle combat taken to a new level: Unreal Tournament III's expanded Onslaught game type features two complete sets of Unreal vehicles, including the massive Leviathan, the terrifying Darkwalker, and a completely new way to get into the Unreal action… the Hoverboard.

  • New and favourite characters: Fight side-by-side with or compete against new and returning Unreal Tournament characters, all with enhanced abilities, extremely detailed looks and distinct personalities.

  • Enhanced popular Unreal Tournament gametypes: Unreal Tournament III includes Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Instagib CTF and more!

  • Online innovations: Unreal Tournament III provides seamless loading on servers in addition to improved Unreal matchmaking for more evenly matched competitors.

I have previously reviewed both the PC and PS3 versions of Unreal Tournament III, so it’s going to take a lot to impress me. While I enjoyed the game immensely on the mentioned machines, I couldn’t help feeling that the game had to come on the Xbox 360, it seemed inevitable. It’s finally here, but was the wait worth it?

Without a doubt, while it doesn’t add anything really new to the game, it adds a much better community known as Xbox Live and of course, the thing I love the most...achievements. The campaign is exactly the same as before and there doesn’t appear to be any visual letdowns in sight; it looks just like the other versions. Now, the big thing that will disappoint most is the lack of user-generated content in this version, but I actually prefer this version over the others and I’ll tell you why.

I’m not sure if now the PS3 version has rumble, but it was something I absolutely craved from the game and it’s so good to have it in full effect here on the 360. I can’t be certain but the AI does differ, the enemies seem smart but teammates AI act rather dumb at times. For example, I could hold off an attack on a base solo and leave it to the AI to defend it and within seconds, they lose it. So I would recommend playing this with friends or enemies over Live, leave the AI where they can’t be used.

Weapons still pack a lovely punch, my favourite being the flak cannon. It would have been nice to have a new weapon for 360 owners, one that was unique. I think that’s the real issue with UT3 on the 360, it doesn’t have any exclusive content that sets it apart from the other versions. Although I don’t find it such a big issue, I know that many of you will. I do seem to have a network issue when it comes to playing UT3, saying that my NAT settings aren’t open when they are. I have no issues playing anything online, so I don’t know what that’s about...hopefully I can sort it soon. I had to actually use another connection to test out the online modes, just if you were wondering.

Like I said, the game looks absolutely fantastic and runs smoothly enough. I can’t really tell the 3 versions apart from a technical point of view, but they all look incredible. Believe me when I say you must treat yourself to this visual beauty. The voice-acting is fairly good but I do think a better soundtrack should have been made for UT3.

    The Verdict

Unreal Tournament III on the Xbox 360 doesn’t add anything new to the game than the other versions but it does have a larger community thanks to Xbox Live, making it the better version for online fragging. You may be disappointed with the lack of mods and no exclusive content, but the 360 version manages to hold its own in its own way.
