There’s a few snowboarding series’ out there like 1080 and SSX, so is there room for another? Well despite your opinion we got another one anyway. Hold on a second, correction time folks…it’s not a snowboard, but instead you are skiing. Now I swear there was an old Gamecube game like this, and it sucked badly. Well I can’t remember what it was called but it left a bad taste in my mouth then and sadly so does FreakOut.

Your goal differs between the different game modes; you will compete in Mission, Freeride, Bone Ride and Slope Style. The goal of the missions is to complete a certain number of challenges, by making tricks, jumping gaps, picking stars and by railing. The more challenges you complete, the more money you get to spend in the shop. Also completing a mission will unlock new slopes and mountains. The Freeride mode goal is to place first in the list by keeping your risk and flow as high as possible. Bone Ride’s goal is to collect the bones before you run out of time and in Slope Style, you have a pre-defined score tat you have to reach by doing tricks.

There is a nice mixture of things to do, but sadly the controls and visuals let it down. The controls feel clunky and ineffective; sometimes you’ll end up skiing backwards when you don’t really want to. Then other times you might find yourself struggling to get up a hill and wonder why. I only came across these a few times, but sadly a few times too many. The graphics in FreakOut are sadly disappointingly bad to look at. It looks really dated, even for a PSP game. We all know the PSP is graphically capable of a lot more, so it’s a shame to see it’s come to this.

    The Verdict

FreakOut Extreme Freestyle is a disappointing game for the PSP. Sure there’s a mixture of things to do, but in term of control and graphics it just isn’t strong enough. Also there’s no multiplayer of any kind, what gives? Stick to SSX or 1080 which although not strictly the same, are much better games than this.
