The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night (DS) By: Adam Waddilove

Can Spyro breath some fire into this one?

Returning to provide voices for The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night are leading Hollywood actors Elijah Wood (Frodo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings trilogy) as Spyro and Gary Oldman (Sirius Black from the Harry Potter films) as Ignitus, the Fire Dragon Elder and Spyro’s mentor.

The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night continues the strong action-infused gameplay focus established in The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning and takes it even further with exciting new powers.

The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night Features:

  • Four new, upgradeable Breath Attacks (one for each element type), such as Ice Bomb, Electric Orb, Earth Vine, Enhanced Fire

  • Four new elemental melee moves, including Comet Dash, Artic Blast, Earth Pound, Electric Spin

  • Four new Fury attacks – Earth, Electricity, Ice, Fire

  • Monstrous new and explosive boss battles against the likes of Skabb the Pirate, Gaul the Ape King and more

I have to admit; despite the flaws of the last Spyro game for PS2 I did like the more epic nature of it. Now the next chapter in the saga is here, but this time it’s the DS version. Which sadly is about as fun as being burnt alive. The truth about The Eternal Night is that it just looks terrible, has very little touch-screen support and is just dull to play. Repetitive gameplay kicks in almost immediately with the combat. It’s just a button basher, only using the stylus for a special move when the enemy is in the air.

There are a few puzzle moments that make good use of the touch-screen, in which you place mirrors and direct the beams of light but it wears a little thin after a while. The game itself is a mixture of combat, platforming and puzzle solving. All of which sadly fail to impress, sure it might do for a kid who doesn’t know the difference between a good and a bad game but for the masses it just doesn’t deliver the goods.

Graphically the game looks pretty bad; when you consider what other great titles the DS has made and then see this, it’ll become clear that they are a ton of better looking games than this. The voice-acting sure is good with Elijah Wood and Gary Oldman but it’d look a lot better on a console version instead. Which brings me to my main point, sure the game is a disappointment to me but I can imagine it being quite appealing on the PS2 like the first Legend of Spyro.

    The Verdict

The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night just doesn’t seem to work for the DS. It just looks and plays bad, fact. I’d really suggest checking out a console version of it instead. It’s bound to look a billion times better than this one.
