E3 2014: Sony Press Conference Highlights

Can Sony win E3 two years in a row?

After last year’s success at E3, all eyes were on Sony last night to see what they had up their sleeves and boy, did they not disappoint. Having said that, there weren’t as many surprises as expected and not even a mention of The Last Guardian probably means there’s some truth to the rumour that it’s been cancelled, either that or it’s going to be renamed as The Lost Guardian.

Highlights of the show including standalone DLC for inFamous: Second Son as you play as Fetch. We got another glimpse of Far Cry 4, which looks epic and set to topple FC3 in terms of quality. The shocker came out of nowhere with LittleBigPlanet 3 which is out in November for PS4 and looks just as great as the first 2.

The Last of Us Remastered is out on the 29th July for PS4 and a no-brainer for Rockstar as GTA V heads to PS4 sometime this Autumn. We did see a 5 minute trailer of MGS V: The Phantom Pain as well which looks like it could be the best yet.

Bungie’s Destiny will have Playstation-exclusive content, while Dead Island 2 was announced with a CGI trailer. Ratchet and Clank fans were treated to a trailer for the upcoming film and news that the original game is going to be remade for PS4. Uncharted 4 got a nice trailer here and sounds like it could be the last in the series. Another surprise was that Grim Fandango is coming to PS4 and Vita.

Other than that, we got glimpses at The Order 1886, Suda 51’s PS4 exclusive “Let it Die”, former Journey dev’s reveal Abzu, and From Software announces Bloodborne which seems like a spiritual succcessor to Demon’s Souls. There was also the reveal of PlayStation TV which allows people to stream Playstation Now content directly to their TVs without a need of a console, while you can also use it to stream content from your PS4 to another TV in your house. There’s a bundle coming out for it which includes the device, HDMI cable, DualShock 3 controller and a copy of the Lego Movie Videogame.

Overall, this wasn’t as strong as last year’s E3 for Sony. It had some great games and reveals like Uncharted 4, Playstation TV, MGS V and Grim Fandango…but it seemed the biggest news was that GTA V was getting the next-gen treatment only later for Rockstar to confirm it’s heading to Xbox One and PC as well. So on the whole, it’s a good show from Sony…but there weren’t many surprises to be found. Still though, it’s a great time to be a gamer!
