PS4 Review: Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition

Is it worth raiding this tomb once more?

Last year’s reboot of Tomb Raider was a risk, but one that Crystal Dynamics pulled off spectacularly and was one of the highlights of the year. Fast forward to 2014 and the game has had the remastering treatment of the next-gen consoles, the PS4 and Xbox One. But have they been able to harness all that new power and bring the island of Yamatai to life?

The short answer is, yes. There’s no point disputing it, this really is the Definitive Edition with TRESS FX tech that shows off Lara’s hair and body in realistic motion, a large improvement to trees, foliage, cloth, weather, lighting and effects that all look stunning in 1080p, the end result is a breathing island and improvements that make Lara look more battle hardened by the events of the game, it’s truly breathtaking to see.

The game comes complete with all the DLC, the campaign remains intact and the only drawback is the multiplayer which is still as average as before and sadly, the trophy list is the same but it is a separate one if you desire to get platinum’s for both the original and definitive versions of the game. Unfortunately that means grinding for the multiplayer trophies, but other than that it’s a solid package and it’s the single player that is the meat of the product and one that is just as memorable now as it was last year.

The Verdict
Is it worth returning to Yamatai if you already have the original version? That’s a tough one since there’s not really a whole lot of new content besides the updated visuals, but on the other hand it’s such an improvement that it’s hard not to be swayed into a second trip to the island.
