Does this shooter make a killing or is it DOA?
As one of the Emperor’s Elite Space Marines you have been sent on a vital mission to assault a gigantic Ork Kroozer headed for an Imperial Forge World.
I enjoy your standard twin-stick third-person shooter game as much as the next person, which is why I was looking forward to seeing what Warhammer 40,000: Kill Team had to offer me as a gamer. Then I began to play it and what started out as a promising opening soon became repetitive and dull quickly. Now while I have little interest in the world of Warhammer, I was willing to give it a chance and carried through till the end, only to be disappointed with dated gameplay and a plot that didn’t engage me.
Kill Team lets you move with the left analog, shoot with the right and use melee and explosive weapons with the other buttons. It starts out decent enough, but it becomes predictable as to where enemies will come from. You’ll get good upgrades and buffs to your health/weapons as you go through the missions, as well as getting an exclusive Power Sword to use in Space Marine just for completing some missions. Kill Team’s biggest letdown is the lack of an online experience. Why there is no online co-op just doesn’t make sense when the game is clearly designed for it. There is local co-op, which makes it just look lazy that they didn’t make it online.
There are camera problems to also contend with. I came across a few areas where the camera got stuck when trying to backtrack to get some distance from a group of enemies, like it just didn’t know how to handle it. Visually, it’s also pretty average and doesn’t have anything special in the bag. The voice-acting is amateur at best, while the sound effects are average.
The Verdict
Warhammer 40,000: Kill Team could have been a highly addictive third-person shooter. Instead it feels ancient when compared to today’s shooters and the lack of online co-op is inexcusable for an arcade game that costs 800 Microsoft Points. Most will probably get this game just for the Power Sword to use in Space Marine, but that’s a pretty expensive reason.
